Install and set up XAMPP - a tutorial
In this practical tip, we explain how to install and set up XAMPP correctly. With XAMPP you not only install the Apache web server, but also the MySQL database and the Perl and PHP scripting languages. In addition, the Tomcat web server can also be installed.
Download and install XAMPP
Download XAMPP. It is advantageous for the XAMPP installation to stop your antivirus program for a short time.
- Then click the executable .exe file.
- Now follow the installation instructions on the screen.
- Under "Select Components" select the components that you want to install. By default, everything is selected here. With XAMPP, web developers receive all the necessary servers and program languages in one installation.
- At the end of the installation, the "Control Panel" can be displayed directly.
XAMPP set incorrect port settings
With Apache's port settings, there are often error messages at the beginning of XAMPP. You will see these problems in the control panel immediately after starting. So it often happens that the SSL port 443, which is set in Apache, is already occupied. One solution is to simply end Skype, for example, which often uses port 443. It is not a permanent solution. You can change the port in Skype or change the Apache port settings with XAMPP. Here's how:
- In the XAMPP Control Panel click on "Config" to the right of Apache.
- Select the "Apache (httpd-ssl.conf)" here. If you want to change the main port, select "Apache (httpd.conf)" here.
- The file now opens in the editor.
- Now look for the faulty port number 443 and replace it with another port number at the positions found. It is best to choose a high port number such as 12548. This ensures that it is not occupied by another process.
- Then save the changes in the editor.
- Now click on "Config" and "Service and Port Settings" in the top right of the control panel.
- Change the port number under "Apache" there as well.
- Click on "Save" and "Save".
XAMPP: start the services
- To start the individual services in Apache, click on "Start" next to the service.
- Click on the respective "Admin", for example to get to the web server address in Apache.
- Your standard browser then opens automatically and directs you to the respective address.
