Install XBMC on Raspberry Pi
Kodi - formerly XBMC - is a powerful media center that is used on a wide variety of platforms. You can easily install the media center on your Raspberry Pi. We will show you how this works in our practical tip.
Install Kodi: Via a suitable operating system
If you only want to use your Raspberry Pi as a media center, it makes sense to choose an operating system that Kodi has already installed. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Select an operating system such as OpenELEC or RaspBMC. A comparison of the two can be found here in our practical tip: OpenELEC or RaspBMC - which is better?
- Download the setup from OpenELEC or RaspBMC and install it on your Raspberry Pi. On the download page you will find the necessary information for the installation.
- Kodi is now installed on your system and ready to turn your Raspberry Pi into a media center.
Install Kodi on existing Raspbian operating system
If you already have a Raspian operating system installed on your Raspberry, you can also download Kodi individually as a package and install it later. Below you will find the necessary steps:
- Download the current package list to your Raspberry with the command "sudo apt-get update".
- Use "df -h" to check how much free space is still available.
- You can then download and install Kodi. To do this, type "sudo apt-get install kodi" into the console. When downloading, you will now see how much storage space is required. If this is not enough, exit the setup with "n" and create more free space. Otherwise, confirm with "y".
- Kodi is now installed on your Raspberry and can be started.
