If you already have an Xbox 360, you can also connect the controller to the PC. It doesn't matter whether you have a wired controller or a wireless model, it can be connected to your PC in just a few steps.
Connect the Xbox 360 controller to the computer
To use a wired Xbox 360 controller on the PC, you must first install the necessary driver:
- Download the driver to your PC. You can find the file here.
- Install the software and restart your PC after installation is complete.
Test the Xbox 360 controller
After the installation of the driver has been successfully completed, you can now connect your wired controller to the PC. Then perform the following steps to check whether the controller is connected correctly:
- Plug the USB plug of your controller into a USB port on your computer.
- Then click on "Start", type in "Run" and enter "joy.cpl". Finally confirm the entry.
- In the new window, select the Xbox 360 controller and click "Properties". Here you can check the functionality of the controller by moving the stick on the controller or pressing the various buttons. Every action should light up in the application on the screen.
Connect the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to your PC
The wireless model of the Xbox 360 controller contains a supplied gaming receiver that connects the controller to the PC by radio.
- Connect the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to your computer via USB. A green light then appears on the receiver, which confirms the functionality.
- The hardware wizard of your computer will now open: Select "Install the software automatically (recommended)", click on "Next" and after the installation is finished on "Finish". (If you need to install the software manually, insert the installation CD and install the software or download the software from the Microsoft homepage).
- Now press the green X in the middle of your controller to switch it on and then the connection button on the receiver, which then lights up green. Then press the connection button on the back of your controller.
- The lights on the controller and the receiver now flash green because a connection is being established. As soon as they are permanently green and no longer flashing, the connection has been successfully established and the controller is ready for use.
All information relates to Windows 7, but connecting an Xbox 360 controller is similar for other operating systems. The download of the PC driver for the wired Xbox 360 controller can be found in the CHIP download area.
