Open XML document - how it works
When you open an XML document, you can edit or expand its content yourself. We explain which tools you need for this.
Open and edit XML file
If you want to open an XML document, you don't necessarily need special software for it:
- A simple text editor, such as that available in Windows, is sufficient.
- Because basically XML is just a text document with a simple syntax. With so-called tags you can enclose values in text form and in this way arrange them in a tree structure.
- However, it is often simply clearer and more practical if you use a tool that supports automatic syntax highlighting and formatting.
- Under Windows, for example, you can do this with the slim Notepad ++ editor or with gedit under Linux (see screenshot).
- If your document has the ".xml" extension, the syntax is automatically displayed clearly.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how you can convert an XML document into CSV format.
