Yahoo account hacked: what to do?
If your Yahoo account has been hacked, it is important to react quickly so that no further damage is done. We'll show you what action you should take.
1. Yahoo account hacked: Try to log in
You should first try to log into the account with your usual password. This will check whether the hacker has changed your password.
- So log in to Yahoo with your usual account details.
- If the login fails, the hacker has probably changed your password. In step 2 we explain how you can request a new password.
2. Request a new password from Yahoo
Often, hackers change the password after taking over a Yahoo account. If you can no longer access your account, you must request a new password from Yahoo.
- To do this, click on "I cannot access my account" below the registration.
- Now choose the case "I suspect that someone has gained unauthorized access to my account." out.
- Enter your Yahoo ID.
- You can then choose whether you would like to reset your password using the security question or whether you would like to receive a new password via your email address.
3. Change password from Yahoo account
If your password has not been changed, you should still play it safe and change your Yahoo password.
- When choosing your password, it is best to make sure that you make it as secure as possible. You should use uppercase and lowercase letters, special characters, and numbers in a mixed order.
4. Disable security questions and enable two-way authentication
To make your Yahoo account even more secure, we recommend that you disable the security questions. The questions are usually so simple that even your neighbor could answer them. Yahoo has long supported two-way authentication. You will receive an extra security code on your mobile phone for each new device you want to use to register. To activate this function, follow these steps:
- First log in to your Yahoo account.
- Then open your account security settings. To do this, move the mouse over your name and select account data or alternatively click on the link.
- Now flip the switch at "Confirmation in two steps" and enter your cell phone number. You will then receive your first security code, which you must re-enter on the Yahoo page.
- You now double backed up.
