With these settings, you can make YouTube child-proof and hide objectionable content from your children. We'll show you the options and how to make the settings.
Make YouTube childproof: Activate safe mode
YouTube’s secure mode makes it possible to hide inappropriate or offensive content. It works like a kind of filter that makes YouTube childproof.
- To do this, go to the YouTube website.
- Scroll down on the home page until you find country and safe mode settings at the bottom of the page.
- Here you activate the function by selecting the drop-down menu and then the "To" button. Confirm the change with "Save".
Android / iOS: make the YouTube app child-proof
In addition to the website on the computer, you should also make your children's smartphones safe. All you have to do is activate the safe mode in the YouTube app.
- Select the three dots (Android) or the gear (iOS) in the YouTube app.
- On Android you will find the secure mode under Settings> General and can activate it with a tap.
- With the iOS Youtube app you only have to select "Settings" and then "SafeSearch" or "Safety Mode". Here you select "Strict" to activate the safe mode.
- Firefox
- safari
- Chrome
It's so easy to bypass YouTube parental controls
Safe mode is designed to protect your children. Unfortunately, it is linked to your YouTube account. After logging into the account and activating parental controls, a cookie is set.
- If your account is still logged in, your child can simply deactivate secure mode.
- The cookie is only saved for the respective browser. If your child uses other browsers, parental controls will not work.
- With the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Del you can delete the browser data on the PC. If your child selects the cookies there and continues, they can surf on YouTube as normal.
- Another problem arises with Android: If you log out of the YouTube account, you do the same from all other Google accounts (Mail, Calendar, Maps, Play Store). So it is not practical.
