Round numbers in OpenOffice - how it works
You can also round numbers with OpenOffice Calc. The free spreadsheet program offers you not only the "Round" function, but also the special cases "Rounding down" and "Rounding up". You can read about how to use the functions in this practical tip.
A well-rounded affair: rounding numbers to predetermined decimal places
If you want to limit your numbers in OpenOffice Calc to a certain decimal place, you should use the "Round" function. There is also the option to display only two decimal places in the number format, for example - but this can lead to incorrect results. How to round correctly:
- Select the cell in your table in which you want to row the number. Then click on the function assistant directly above your spreadsheet. It is hidden behind the function symbol "fx".
- In the opened function wizard, scroll under the "Functions" tab to the "Round" function. Click on the function so that the entry is highlighted in blue. Select "Next" in the footer of the wizard.
- In the following window of the function assistant you will see two input fields. In the first field "Number" enter the corresponding cell (for example D23), in the second field "Number" the number of decimal places you want.
- You can already see the result of the arithmetic operation and the formula representation of the command in this window. With a click on "OK" the result is transferred to your table.
For advanced users: Round numbers directly with the formula
Direct formula entry is faster than using the function wizard.
- To do this, click on the cell in which the result is to be output.
- Then enter the command in the input line above your worksheet: = ROUND ("table position number"; "number of decimal places"), for example = ROUND (D23; 2).
- With a click on the enter key you confirm the operation and the result is entered in the table.
Another tip: Page numbers in OpenOffice only from page three
This practical tip is based on OpenOffice Calc version 4.0.0. With a largely comparable range of functions, OpenOffice Calc is a good alternative to the chargeable spreadsheet program Excel, for example you can also keep your tables clear in OpenOffice Calc with filters. Read how to do this in the practical tip "How to filter tables in OpenOffice Calc".
