Sort lines in Microsoft Word: Here's how
Microsoft Word contains a practical tool that hardly anyone knows: You can sort lines with just a few clicks. You can choose between alphabetical or numerical. We show you how to use the tool correctly.
Sort lines in Word alphabetically or numerically
In order to use the sorting tool, you must have several paragraphs in your document. A list is useful, for example, for sorting. You cannot sort a simple sequence of lines, they must be separated by paragraphs. Here's how to do it:
- Select the paragraphs you want to sort.
- On the "Home" tab, click the sort icon under "Paragraph". It is a symbol with an arrow next to the letters A and Z.
- In the window that opens, you can choose whether you want to sort by alphabet, numbers or date. If your document contains defined fields or headings, you can sort by fields or headings instead of paragraphs.
- Finally, you determine whether you want to sort in ascending or descending order and confirm with "OK".
On the next page we will show you how to automatically number headings in Word.
