Sugar per day: How much sugar is healthy in a day
This practical tip tells you how much sugar you should consume per day and which tricks the food industry uses here.
So much sugar is healthy
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), we shouldn't consume more than six teaspoons of sugar a day from processed foods. That corresponds to 25 grams. The average sugar intake in Germany is 90 grams per day.
- One gram of sugar contains about four kilocalories. 25 grams corresponds to 100 kilocalories, which is five percent of the recommended daily requirement of 2000 kilocalories.
- Many energy drinks, fruit juices, spritzers, iced teas and lemonades sometimes contain more than five percent sugar. That would be 50 grams per liter - twice the daily requirement.
- Excessive sugar consumption increases the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and tooth decay. In addition, many finished products contain a large amount of sugar, but no other nutrients such as vitamins or minerals.
- Pay attention to the nutritional information when buying. If you don't find a number, you can use the following rule of thumb: the higher the sugar is listed, the higher its share.
- By the way, substances like fructose, glucose or sucrose are also often hidden sugar information.
