Operate two routers in a network - how it works
There are various reasons why you can want to operate two routers in a network: Most of the time, it is the different capabilities of the devices that are to be used in this way. In most cases, routers combine DSL modem, router, Ethernet switch and WLAN access point in one housing. Some models also have IP ATM gateways (IP telephony), DECT base stations, printer servers, NAS functions and much more. Most of these components don't mind if the same device is on the network. Others, such as the DHCP server, can only have one.
How to connect two routers to your internet network
So if you have two routers on the network, you should do two things:
- Activate the DHCP server only for one device. It distributes the IP addresses to every device in the network. Two DHCP servers are guaranteed to get in each other's way, which can lead to network failure.
- Only activate the modem for one device and connect it to the DSL connection in your home. The provider data must also be entered here. Deactivate the modem of the second router. With many routers, you then have to connect the Ethernet Internet cable to the WAN port. This socket is no longer used with the FritzBox. LAN1 is now the input port of the router.
If both routers run successfully in the network, you may have to configure them. This practical tip reveals how it works ..
