atikmdag.sys blue screen: You can do that
The blue screen occurs when the ATI graphics driver atikmdag.sys stops responding and does not start itself. This practical tip shows you what you can do in this case.
Ati driver atikmdag.sys causes error reporting - the solution
If there is no feedback from the driver, Windows concludes that the driver or the graphics card has crashed - and shows the blue screen. You can fix the problem as follows:
- Download and install the latest ATI driver.
- Next start Explorer and open the folder "C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Drivers". Find the file "atikmdag.sys" and rename it to "atikmdag.sys.old".
- Now search for the ATI directory on your computer. You can usually find it under "C: \ ATI". From there, copy the file "atikmdag.sy_" to your desktop.
- Now start the command prompt. In Windows 8, you can find them by entering "cmd" in the app search. In previous versions of Windows click on "Start", enter "cmd" in the input field and confirm with "Enter".
- You should now see the path "C: \ Users \ Username" in the input field (instead of "Username" read your user name). Enter the "cd desktop" command to switch to the desktop and expand the file. To do this, enter the command line "EXPAND.EXE atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys" and confirm with the Enter key.
- Now you can end the command prompt. Copy the new "atikmdag.sys" into the folder "" C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Drivers "and restart the PC. The problem should now be solved.
