Having to defrost car windows in the early morning is one of the less popular pursuits in winter. If you don't have a garage, you will hardly be able to avoid deicing. However, there are a few tricks that will make your job easier.
De-icing car windows: You have these options
Although it is very tempting, you should only refrain from quickly defrosting a small peephole in winter before you set off.
- If you get caught, you face a fine.
- You are obliged to de-ice both the windscreen and the side windows before you set off.
- You are in even greater trouble if you are involved in an accident with the icy windows.
De-icing the car windows quickly and easily
If you pay attention to a few things in advance, defrosting will be easier later.
- If you park your car in a reasonably safe area or on your own property, it is worth investing a few euros in good thermal window protection. The window protection mostly effectively prevents the car windows from icing up. You only have to remove the window protection in the evening and quickly remove it in the morning.
- In addition, place a so-called half-garage over it, minimize the risk of standing in front of icy windows in the morning and may not have to laboriously clear your car from the snow.
- With the help of so-called de-icing spray, you can remove the ice layer from your car windows relatively quickly. Simply spray on, wait a short moment and then quickly remove the thawed ice. This method of deicing is quite comfortable, but relatively expensive in the long run, because only good deicing sprays are actually effective.
- It is cheaper to mix an effective deicer spray yourself. All you need is antifreeze for the windscreen washer system. Mix the antifreeze in a 2: 1 ratio with water. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and your de-icing spray is ready.
- An old trick to defrost the car window more easily is using a hot water bottle, or better two hot water bottles. Put hot water on before breakfast. Pour the hot water into the hot water bottles and place the hot water bottles on the dashboard of your car. Make absolutely sure that the hot water bottles do not touch the car windows. After breakfast, about 30 minutes later, the car windows are at least thawed so far that scraping off the ice is not that difficult anymore.
- The modern variant of the hot water bottle is called auxiliary heating. However, you do not necessarily have to retrofit an auxiliary heater. There are also significantly cheaper mobile interior heaters for the car. However, you should not fall back on the cheapest model, since they usually work less efficiently and the risk of fire cannot be completely ruled out. Make absolutely sure that the auxiliary heater has automatic overheating protection and has the right power for the size of your car. You have to expect around eighty euros for the luxury, but it is also the much more comfortable option and in a long, very cold winter you will love the heater. In addition, such an auxiliary heater usually lasts several winters and then the purchase price pays off quickly.
- Tip: It is also important, and not only in winter, to do something about the moisture in the car.
In winter, however, you don't just have to worry about defrosting the car windows. We have therefore prepared a small car checklist for you for the winter.
