Use Google Translate offline - is that possible?
The Google translator is particularly useful on vacation, but you don't always have the Internet abroad. This tip explains how you can use the app offline.
iOS: Unfortunately, Google Translate does not yet work offline on the iPhone
Unfortunately, you are currently unable to use the iOS translator app offline.
- Alternatively, iPhone users can use the dict.cc dictionary. The free dictionary app is also available offline. However, you can only translate individual words or phrases with the app.
- The PROMT translator app for iOS also translates entire sentences offline. However, the app is not free and currently only offers the language pairs German-English and German-Russian.
Android: Use the Google translator offline
You can also use the Android version of the app offline on your smartphone or tablet. To do this, download language packs:
- Open the Google Translate app and tap the three dots in the top right.
- Select "Settings" and there "Manage offline languages".
- You will then see under "Installed" which languages you have already downloaded.
- Under "All" tap on the pin next to the desired language and confirm with "OK" to download the packages.
- Note that the language packs are very large. So you should only download the packages via WiFi and have enough free space on your smartphone. We explain how to make space on your android or iPhone.
