iPhone frozen: you can do that
If your iPhone is frozen, you can no longer operate it properly. We'll show you how to force a restart and take further action in an emergency.
Step 1: soft reset on frozen iPhone
- Press and hold the power button and the home button on the iPhone at the same time. Do not release the two buttons until you notice a change on the display.
- After about 10 seconds at the latest, the iPhone should switch off and then restart on its own. In many cases the problem is already solved.
- Since the iPhone 7, this process has been a little different. Here you have to hold down the power button and the volume down button at the same time.
Step 2: iPhone frozen - hard reset
- If the iPhone does not respond to the emergency stop, you can also wait for the battery to empty itself and the iPhone to go out. If you are not in a hurry and the battery level is below 20 percent, it is often only a matter of minutes.
- If you don't want to or can't wait that long, the second option is the hard reset of the iPhone. To do this, you have to start the device in DFU mode.
- If the iPhone is frozen, it is only recognized to a limited extent on the computer. In order to reset the device, you have to start the DFU mode. Note that this doesn't work in many cases, but it's worth trying.
- A hard reset deletes all data on the device. If you have previously created a backup via iCloud or iTunes, only the new files after the last backup will be lost when you reset.
