iPhone X with Face ID: This is how the feature works
With the iPhone X, the fingerprint sensor is replaced by the Face ID. We'll explain how the new feature works.
iPhone X: How Face ID works
With the new 3D face recognition, you can unlock your iPhone X contact-free for the first time - only by eye contact.
- The new iPhone X recognizes its owner as soon as it looks at the display.
- The arrangement of various sensors next to the front camera is responsible for the functioning of the new technology. These sensors create a 3D image of the face. Poor lighting conditions should not be an obstacle to detection any more than glasses or hats.
- The technology is also learnable: with every use of Face ID, the iPhone gets to know your face better.
How secure is Face ID?
With Face ID you should also be able to pay via Apple Pay. In addition to protecting your data, this naturally raises the question of security.
- No data that is collected via Face ID and thus about your face will be forwarded to Apple. This data remains exclusively on the iPhone. The same principle applied to Touch ID.
- According to Apple, the new 3D face recognition should be 20 times more secure than the previous Touch ID. While the likelihood of misuse of the Touch ID was around 1: 50, 000, the possibility of outsmarting the Face ID is said to have dropped to 1: 1, 000, 000.
- The only mano of Face ID versus Touch ID: There are no two identical fingerprints. It remains to be seen whether Face ID will be able to cope with identical twins.
