Do you want to create a table of contents and an outline for a LaTeX? In this practical tip, we show you how to proceed:
How to get the table of contents and structure in LaTeX
If you want to create a table of contents and an outline in the TeX software package LaTeX, you need to know a few commands for the different document classes. Follow these steps to structure your text documents of the classes article (scrartcl), book (scrbook) or report (scrreprt) in the LaTeX editor Texmaker:
- Start your LaTeX document as usual.
- Use the command \ tableofcontents at the beginning of the text document to create a table of contents.
- The command \ chapter {*} is available for the document classes book and report. With this you create a new page in report, with book this is created on the next free right page. \ chapter {*} is the top level for these two document classes.
- Below this level is the \ section {*} level - you can use this to create headings. In the article document class, this is the highest level of structure. Use \ subsection {*} to create subheadings and \ subsubsection {*} to create subheadings.
- With the commands \ paragraph {*} and \ subparagraph {*} you can divide your paragraphs into paragraphs and subparagraphs.
- Now you have all the commands to structure your LaTeX document and create a table of contents.
