Run Metro apps in the classic Windows window
If you run apps in Windows 8, they are always displayed in full screen. This practical tip shows you how you can still open Metro apps in the window.
Show Windows apps in desktop mode
In order to force apps into the usual Windows windows, you need an additional tool such as ModernMix. After a free trial, you have to buy ModernMix for $ 4.99. If you regularly work with Windows 8, this investment is definitely worth it.
- During installation, deactivate the option for Start8 and click on "Next".
- Then select "Try ModernMix", enter an email address and confirm the link "Activate 30-Day Trial" before you can continue with "Next". After a few notes, you will be taken directly to the configuration menu.
Run in the window with ModernMix Metro apps
- In the »General« category you define how apps should be displayed when they are started. The specifications with full screen when starting from the tile view and in the window when starting from the desktop are certainly useful.
- You can also leave the options for saving the last state in this way. In the »Advanced« area, for example, you activate the first option »Show fullscreen applications on the taskbar« so that the apps are also visible in the taskbar.
- Furthermore, in the category »App settings« you can make separate specifications for each app that deviate from the general basic setting. If you want to have »Weather« always shown in the window, right-click on it and select the context command »Windowed«. In addition, the command "Create shortcut to this application on my desktop" enables a quick link to start this app more conveniently.
- In the full-screen display, ModernMix adds a small, overlaid menu at the top right, which you can use to switch the views and also continue to open the Charm bar. If you have left this option activated, you can switch the view quickly at any time using the [F10] key.
