Send messages via home network - Here's how it works
If you want to send messages back and forth between two or more computers over the home network, you do not necessarily need additional software. We'll show you how this works with on-board equipment in Windows.
Windows: Send messages over the home network
Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens. Enter "cmd" here and click "OK". Then the command prompt starts.
- Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10: Simply enter the command "msg" followed by the user and your message. The message is sent via the [Enter] key.
- Example: "msg user1 how are you?" or "msg 192.168.178.29 How are you?". Tip: You can find out your IP address using the "ipconfig" command.
- Windows XP: Use the "net send" command instead of "msg". Before doing this, you have to activate the "Message service" in the Windows services on both recipients.
- Note: In the Home Basic and Home Premium versions, the service does not work under Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Send messages via software over the home network
- If you want to send messages over your network more often, this is also much more convenient. With the free software "WinSent Messenger" you get an extremely slim chat program. You can simply add other users via their IP address or user name as a contact and you're ready to go.
- The also free IP Messenger (IPMSG) is available for various systems. So you exchange your messages not only via Windows, but also with users of Mac OS, Linux, iOS or Android.
