OpenVPN: You must open these ports
In order for the requests via OpenVPN to arrive correctly on your computer, you have to enable a special port. We clarify which this is in this practical tip.
Enable port for OpenVPN in firewall and router
- The port that is normally used for OpenVPN is UDP 1194.
- In the menu of your router you have to specify that port 1194 incoming data should be forwarded to your static (fixed) IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.102).
- Under the FritzBox you will find the settings for port release mostly under "Internet / Shares / Port Releases".
- You must assign a fixed IP address to your computer, as this normally changes (is dynamic) when you switch off the device, for example, and then a smartphone logs in to the router via WLAN.
- You may also need to add an exception to the Windows firewall to allow UDP 1194 to pass through. Via "Add program" you can also grant "openvpn.exe" access to the Internet.
We will show you how to set up OpenVPN on Android in the next article.
