How does Greasemonkey work?
With the Firefox addon Greasemonkey, foreign websites can be changed according to your wishes. You can find out how the plugin works in this practical tip.
Greasemonkey - This is how the browser addon works
- Download Greasemonkey and install the addon.
- In the newly opened Firefox window, you can now see a monkey head icon on the right in the navigation toolbar and an arrow symbol next to it. Greasemonkey is activated if the monkey head is not faded. If you want to activate / deactivate the addon, simply click on the head.
- You can write your own programs for Greasemonkey, provided you master the JavaScript language. If you execute these scripts, the look and behavior of other websites will change in your browser. For example, there are many ready-made scripts on userscripts.org.
- Click on the small arrow icon next to the monkey head. Select "New user script" here.
- In the window that now opens, enter the name, for example, "Test-Script", under the namespace type "www.chip.de" Optionally, describe the function of this script. Under "Apply to these pages (specify line by line)" enter "//www.chip.de/".
- An editor will now open, in which you will find the information you just entered as code. Write an execution code under the last line, eg "alert ('I love Chip!')". Copy this small snippet of code under the last line in the editor (without the quotation marks). Click on "Save".
- Whenever you call Chip.de, you will first see the message ('I love Chip!').
- If you want to deactivate or delete this Greasemonkey script again, click on the arrow symbol again and select "Manage user scripts". In the now open "Add-ons Manager" click on "Deactivate" or, if you never want to activate the script again, on "Remove".
