Windows: Prioritize LAN connection - how it works
Read this practical tip to find out how to prioritize the LAN connection under Windows.
Use LAN connection preferred
Laptops with an integrated WLAN module dial into the saved wireless network independently. However, if there is also a LAN connection, you should prefer this. Read here how to prioritize the individual connections:
- In the Control Panel, click on "Network and Internet" and then on "Network and Sharing Center".
- Now follow the link "Change adapter settings" or under Vista / Windows 7 the link "Manage network connections".
- The description of the individual connections indicates which network and which network card it is. If, for example, several LAN connections are set up for a private and business network, you will find the right connection. Networks that are not used are marked with a red cross.
- Now press the [Alt] key to display the context menu and select the command »Advanced | Advanced settings".
- In the »Adapters and bindings« tab, all network connections set up are listed in the order in which the system accesses them. So the first available connection is always used and not the fastest.
- Now mark the »LAN connection« and move it to the top position with the arrow symbols shown here. If necessary, change the order of the other connections and confirm the dialog Click on »OK«.
