Access your own router - Here's how
To set up your WiFi or internet access, you need to access your router. In this practical tip, we will explain how to get access to your router.
Find out the router's IP address
To be able to access your own router, you first need to find out the router's IP address. If you already know this, you can continue with the second paragraph.
- Open the Windows command prompt. For Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, type "Command Prompt" in the search and press "Enter".
- Type the command "ipconfig" into the command prompt and confirm again with "Enter".
- Now look for the entry "Standard gateway" and write down the IP address.
How to access your router
After you know the IP address of your router, you can access your router. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Open your internet browser.
- Now enter // "IP address of your router" in the address bar and press "Enter". Here you use the IP address found in the previous step for "IP address of your router". Write the IP address without quotes in the address line.
- Now the login window of your router opens.
- In the initial configuration, a password is usually not yet set for the login. If you are asked for a password, see the operating instructions for your router. There you will find the standard password.
Access the Fritz! Box
If you use the widely used Fritz! Box as a router, access the router as follows:
- Open your internet browser.
- Type //fritz.box in the address bar and press [Enter].
- The login window of your Fritz! Box opens. No user name and password are required for the first configuration.
This practical tip is based on Windows 8. The procedure may differ in older versions.
