Taking a child on a scooter - is that possible?
Taking a child on a scooter is a decision that needs to be well thought out. As is known, motorcycles are not among the safest forms of transportation. Legislators make relatively few specifications for taking children on a scooter. We explain what you need to know and what you need to consider.
Child as a passenger on the scooter - that is what the legislator says
If you want to take a child or an adult passenger on your scooter, the machine must be approved for two people in accordance with Section 35a (9) of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). Basically, the legislature does not care whether the passenger is a child or an adult. According to the road traffic regulations, however, the physical maturity of the passenger is important.
- In fact, the legislature has not issued any special requirements for taking children on a scooter. Therefore, there is no minimum age for the passenger on a motorcycle. The legal regulations according to StVZO apply to all passengers, no matter how old they are.
- According to the StVZO, the seat for the passenger must be equipped with holding options and footrests. In addition, the passenger must have the "physical maturity" to ride on a motorcycle or scooter.
- This means that your child must be physically and mentally able to hold on properly and sit correctly on the scooter. This includes that the child's feet stand securely on the footrests of the scooter.
Take children on a scooter or motorcycle - so it'll work
Ultimately, your child's ability to drive depends on its size and strength to hold on properly. Legislators, like us, recommend a child seat for children under the age of seven. You should also secure the rear wheel of the scooter so that the child's feet cannot get caught in the spokes.
- If the child is safely stored on the scooter, you can take it with you. A special child seat for the scooter is certainly a good idea, whether prescribed or not.
- There are also special seat belts for children on the motorcycle, which you can get for under 20 euros. Appropriate protective clothing such as a helmet is also required.
