First sentence of the application: this is how you can convince
The reader should remember the first sentence of your application. It is therefore particularly important that you find a good start for your cover letter. Our article will help you.
This is what matters in the first sentence of your application
Everything is pure formality, but in the first sentence of your application letter you have to arouse the interest of the HR manager. So that you can master this challenge, you should write something interesting.
- Phrases like "I hereby apply" only reflect the obvious and have nothing to do with your interest in the job.
- Especially HR staff, who have to read a lot of motivation letters and applications, are probably only bored with such a sentence. It is precisely for this reason that you should avoid sample sentences and phrases.
- So try to write something that actually drew your attention to the job advertisement.
- It is suitable, for example, that you have been dealing with a focus of the company for a long time. This shows a very concrete and honest interest, instead of a phrase like "I am interested in your job offer".
- In general, anything is good that creates a connection between you and the company.
- You can also name something that you find particularly commendable about the company. If you are a longstanding customer of a company, you can point this out. Just don't overdo it!
- Instead of drawing attention to yourself, you can also focus on something else: Show the company that you have dealt with company policy and can be of use to the company.
- It is ideal if you have already had contact with the company at a trade fair or via telephone or email: Start your cover letter by saying thank you for the informative discussion. In this way you can immediately see that you already know each other and the reader will consider who you are.
Formulations for the first sentence
There are many different situations for applications. It is always important that you respond precisely to these individual circumstances and do not copy sample sentences from the Internet. Here are some suggestions:
- "I have been fascinated by the developments in the local real estate market for a long time, which is why I read the job advertisement of your housing association with great enthusiasm."
- "Your products have been with me since childhood. When I read that you were looking for reinforcements for your team, I knew straight away that it would fit!"
- "I am impressed by how your company combines traditional craftsmanship with new and future-oriented ideas. With my knowledge and experience in renewable energies, I would like to support your team in this project."
- "I read in the newspaper that your company would like to expand within Europe. Due to my fluent knowledge of Spanish and French, I will ensure that customer service does not interfere with communication."
