FileZilla: Login with SSH key - how it works
If you want to log in to FileZilla with an SSH key, it's very easy. We'll show you how it works and what you have to watch out for.
Log in to FileZilla with an SSH key
The SSH key consists of a public and a private key file. You can create a key pair using the PuTTYgen program. To use the key, you must save the public key in a text file and send it to the server administrator. You can then log in to Filezilla as follows:
- Start FileZilla first.
- Click the icon on the far left to add a server.
- Select "new server". Here you can assign any name for the server.
- Enter the IP address or the DNS name of the server under "Server". Select "SFTP" for the protocol, if it is an SFTP connection.
- Also add your user name and set the "Interactive" option under "Connection type".
- Confirm with OK".
- Navigate to the settings via "Edit".
- Now select "SFTP" on the left side.
- You can now select your previously created private key file using the "Add key file" button. Important: Do not share this file with anyone!
- Finally confirm with "OK".
- You can now connect to the newly added server by clicking on the arrow in the upper left corner.
- If a warning message appears, you can confirm this "OK". You are now connected to the server.
