Firefox Black Screen: You can do that
Does the Firefox browser only show a black screen when you want to open a page? Then you have either caught a virus or there is a setting error in the browser. Read here what you can do in this case.
Firefox Black Screen: Check for malware
- First of all, you should delete the browser data in Firefox. To do this, open the menu using the three bars at the top right and select "Settings". Under "Advanced" in the "Network" tab, click on "Empty now" after "Cached web content" and "Offline web content and user data".
- The next step is to check your PC for viruses and malware. We recommend the free tool Malwarebytes - Malware Scanner.
Firefox Black Screen: Deactivate hardware acceleration
A black screen can also be caused by a specific Firefox setting.
- Open the Firefox menu and select "Settings -> Advanced" again.
- Under the "General" tab you will find the option "Use hardware acceleration if available". Deactivate this setting by removing the check mark in front.
Firefox Black Screen: Start Firefox without add-ons
If the black screen problem is not resolved, start Firefox in Safe Mode.
- Open the Firefox menu again and click on the question mark in the bottom bar of the menu.
- In the side window that opens, select "Restart with deactivated add-ons". Another query appears asking whether you would like to restart safely. Confirm here with "Restart".
- If the black screen does not appear in Firefox's safe mode and you can open websites easily, you should deactivate all add-ons in the settings.
- Then activate one of the installed add-ons and check whether the problem occurs again. This way you can find out which extension causes a black screen and then delete this add-on.
Firefox may flicker while surfing. The solution to this problem can be found in the next practical tip.
