The Fritzbox manufacturer AVM has published a list of all routers and WLAN repeaters affected by the security vulnerability. For which models you need a security update and which devices are safe according to AVM, you can find out here.
Security update for Fritzbox router and WLAN repeater
The list of affected Fritzbox routers can be found here or for international models here (as of February 21, 2014). A security update is also recommended for some WLAN repeaters.
- If your model is classified as "safe, no update necessary", you do not need to worry at first. Nevertheless, check regularly whether there is a new update for your model.
- If the status "Available" appears next to your model, you will find the update next to it. For example, the "FRITZ! OS 04.88" update must be downloaded for the FRITZ! Box model 7170.
How to check which AVM device you own
To download the appropriate update, you need to know which FRITZ! Box or repeater model you have.
- Enter the IP addresses 192.168.178.254 or 169.254.1.1 in the address bar of your browser and press Enter. If you don't get into the Fritzbox menu, try typing "fritz.box" instead.
- You should now be in the Fritzbox interface. Click on Overview here.
- The overview shows your FRITZ! Box model according to the following model: "FRITZ! BOX Fon WLAN" plus the corresponding model number. This number determines which update you need to download.
- You can find out how to update your Fritzbox in this practical tip.
In addition to the update, you should also deactivate remote access to your Fritzbox. If you want to enter the Firtzbox menu but have forgotten your password, we will help you here.
