FTP commands: The 20 most important commands
FTP programs are convenient: You can also run the communication between the FTP client and FTP server with the most important commands via the terminal. We show you the 20 most important commands.
FTP command HELP
Enter this command and you will get a list of all commands stored in the FTP server.
FTP command TYPE
With this command you call up the current transfer mode (binary or ASCII).
FTP command BINARY
The command sets the binary transmission mode.
FTP command ASCII
This command changes to ASCII transmission mode.
FTP command CD
"CD" is the abbreviation for "change directory" and changes to the directory of the next higher level.
FTP command CDUP
In contrast to "CD", the "CDUP" command not only changes to the directory of the next higher level, but also to the home directory.
FTP command DEBUG
This command changes to DEBUG mode.
FTP command DIR
This command gives you an overview of the contents of a directory.
FTP command DELE
If you want to delete a file, use this command.
FTP command GET
If you want to receive a file that is on the server, enter this command followed by the file name.
FTP command PUT
With "PUT" in connection with the file name you send a local file to the server.
FTP command MKDIR
If you want to create a new directory, you can do this by entering the "MKDIR" command.
FTP command MDDELETE
If you want to delete several files at once, use this command.
FTP command APPEND
With the FTP command "APPEND" you link a local file with a server file.
FTP command RMD
You can delete individual files with "DELE". Whole directories, on the other hand, are deleted with the "RMD" command.
FTP command PORT
With "PORT" you transfer the port number at the client for the data channel.
FTP command SYST
This tells you which operating system is installed on the server.
FTP command SIZE
Entering this command shows the size of a file.
FTP command EXEC
The "EXEC" command executes a file.
FTP command QUIT
With this command you end the current session.
