Gamer slang: Ragequit, Noob and Co. - that's what the names mean
Gamer slang has emerged as a subgenre of net jargon among players. This language uses some words and abbreviations, the meaning of which is not always immediately apparent. We have summarized the most important terms for you.
Gamer slang: Abbreviations like CTF, DPS and FTW
In order to write an entire sentence quickly, the words are sometimes shortened to the individual letters. However, the decryption is not always straightforward.
- AE or AOE: Area (of) Effect - Indicates an attack that causes environmental damage
- CTF: Capture The Flag
- CD: Cooldown - Cooldown
- Char: Character
- DC: Disconnect - Connection to the server lost
- DMG: Damage - damage
- DoT: Damage over Time - damage that works over time
- DPS: Damage per second - damage per second
- FTW: For The Win - Mostly used when winning
- GG: Good Game. This will show respect to the opponent at the end of the game.
- HoT: Heal over Time - Indicates how much healing takes place over a certain time
- IMBA: Imbalanced - Represents a character or item that is "unbalanced" and therefore leads to an unfair advantage.
- K or KK: Abbreviation for Okay
- LFG: Looking For Group - Used when looking for teammates for a group game
- NPC: Non Player Character - A computer controlled character
- RTFM: Read The Fucking Manual - Translated read the damn instructions. Used when someone repeatedly asks a simple question about a character or item.
- SCNR: Sorry, could not resist. Abbreviation if you couldn't resist something
- ts: Team Speak
- XP: experience points
- 1v1: one against one. Often used when players want to compete alone.
Words in gamer slang
In addition to the abbreviations, there are also some words, some of which have a different meaning.
- Aggro: Here, a player should draw the attention of the opponents and thus distract the damage from other, weaker players.
- Aimbot: Programs that automatically detect the target
- Buff: An extra that reinforces certain characteristics of the character
- Battle Royale: In this game mode you fight alone or with a small group on a huge map for pure survival.
- Bug: game error
- Camper: Pejorative for a player who only waits in one place
- Casting: term for "magic"
- Cheater: player who fights with unfair means (see Aimbot)
- Dropping: dropping something, like an object
- Debuff: opposite of Buff
- Fanboy: Somewhat pejorative for a person attached to a particular game or console
- Fedex Quest: Stands for a boring mission where you have to move an item from A to B.
- Farming: To become stronger, you have to kill weaker monsters in some players. If this happens repeatedly, it is called farming.
- Question: Represents the shooting down of an opponent
- Ganker or Grief-Play: stands for the ambush attack
- God Mode: Denotes the immortality of a player
- Grinding / to grind: increase the level of the character by killing monsters or opponents. Often referred to as "farming".
- Healer: Character with the skills to heal other characters in the game.
- Item: Universal term for an item
- Killsteal (KS): Used when a player steals experience points by making the last stroke.
- Lag: Delay in connection
- Loot: coveted items
- Mob: umbrella term for monsters
- Noob: Pejorative for bad players or beginners
- Nerf: weakening of a character or item by the developer
- Overpowered (OP): When a player or item is superior (similar to IMBA)
- PWNED: Means something like "finished", is used pejoratively
- Party: group game
- Ragequit: When a player leaves the game "angry", perhaps because he or his team are losing
- Skill: skill of characters or praising expression for a player
- Scrub: spoiler, beginner
- Tank: The character with the most armor or life in the game. In the fight it goes ahead and causes the most damage.
- Uber: Overpowering, similar to "Overpowered" or "IMBA"
- walking simulator: These are games in which there are no opponents. The aim of the game is to explore the game world and its history. Representatives of the genre include Everybody's Gone to the Rapture or The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
- w00t: Term for expressing surprise
