GMX email account hacked: recovery measures
Depending on whether you can still log in with your original password, two different solutions are suitable. This section describes how to proceed if you still have access to your account.
- First change your password so that no one can access your data from outside. We explain in another article what constitutes a secure password.
- If you use other accounts with the same password, change the passwords there as well.
- Inform your email contacts that they should not open any attachments or links from your emails for the time being.
- In a BSI security test, you can test whether you have been the victim of identity theft.
- In addition, check in your outbox whether there are e-mails that are not from you.
- If you use your GMX account on multiple devices, scan all of these computers, smartphones and tablets with a virus scanner.
- Check your user data whether they have been changed. The alternate email address that will give you a new password if necessary is a popular hacking target. Also check the email address to which your emails will be forwarded.
No more access to the GMX account: help against hacking
If your password has been changed, you can first try to access it using the "Forgot your password" option.
- Depending on the setting, you will receive an e-mail to your stored second e-mail address or an SMS to your cell phone number.
- If the hackers have changed this data or you have not stored any data, contact GMX support.
