Remove Hummingwhale trojans - Here's how
A new malware from China is spreading on an increasing number of Android smartphones: HummingWhale is the name of the trojan that reaches the cell phone via infected apps. This practical tip shows you how to remove the malware.
HummingWhale: Detect Trojans - Here's how
You can tell whether your mobile phone is infected by the trojan by the following abnormalities:
- HummingWhale is not directly recognizable as malware. The cell phone continues to run as usual.
- However, the Trojan provides significantly more advertising banners in apps and browsers.
- The malware also automatically installs other apps on your phone.
- So if suddenly more advertising appears than usual and new unknown entries can be found in the app list, your smartphone is probably infected.
HummingWhale: Remove malware - how it works
HummingWhale cannot be removed with ordinary virus scanners for Android. So there is no other solution than to reset your cell phone. The exact menu navigation depends on your smartphone.
- Open the settings on your smartphone.
- Under "User" choose "Save and reset".
- Select "Reset to factory settings".
- Confirm the process and wait for the phone to restart.
HummingWhale: How to protect yourself
You can protect yourself from the HummingWhale malware by following a few things:
- Install a virus scanner for Android. Most scanners do not currently recognize the malware, but this is likely to change soon.
- Do not install apps with Chinese description on your smartphone.
