Identify insects: 3 apps at a glance
If you are interested in insects, it can be fun to identify different types. In this article, we present three apps that can help you identify insects.
Determine insects with the "Map of Life" app
The first app we present to you is called "Map of Life" and is a database for insects and other animals.
- With this database you can determine up to 30, 000 animal species. These are not only insects, but also reptiles, mammals and birds.
- The app can determine a location and then show you on a map which animal species are native to this area. You can also simply choose a location and you will be shown the native species there.
- The app is available free of charge for Android and iOS. However, it does not offer photo recognition of the animals and is rather simple in appearance.
App for German biodiversity
The second app is called "Identify insects and butterflies". The name is a bit misleading, since, strictly speaking, butterflies are also insects.
- The app presents the most important insect and butterfly species native to Germany and offers a large number of high-resolution pictures with a description of the species. Furthermore, a recognition is integrated in the app, in which you can enter characteristics and thus determine the types.
- Other functions include a knowledge quiz and adding your own discoveries. The application itself is somewhat more complex to display than the first app.
- However, the application costs a whopping 9 euros 99 cents, which seems a bit high for the number of species. Only around 100 species are registered.
- Even if it has no photo recognition, the high-resolution insect images are the highlight of the app.
Alternative "NABU insect world"
The third app is called "NABU Insects World" and was developed in cooperation with the Nature Conservation Association (NABU).
- This app is roughly the same size as the "Identify insects and butterflies" app and also offers a database of photos. Here, too, you can add your own discoveries to the database.
- NABU Insect World is available free of charge for Android and iOS. In contrast to the other two, this app has integrated photo recognition.
- However, the high memory requirements on the mobile phone and the not too large size of the database, which also includes around 100 types, are disadvantageous here.
