iPhone / iPad: Hide umlauts on the keyboard
Under iOS 8 the German keyboard including the umlauts ä, ö and ü is activated on your iPhone or iPad. Hiding the umlaut keys can make sense, however, if you mainly write non-German texts or simply want to use larger keypads on your iDevice. Read here how to quickly switch to a German keyboard without umlauts.
iPhone and iPad keyboard without umlauts
- Open the "Settings" on your iDevice. There you will find the "Keyboard" entry under "General".
- Follow the path "Keyboard" → "Keyboards" → "Add keyboard".
- Select "German (Germany") from the list of suggested keyboards. Activate the entry "QWERTZ". Now you will see a blue check mark in the list of keyboards behind the entries "German" and "QWERTZ".
- Leave the "Settings app". The next time you enter text, switch to the German keyboard without umlauts. To do this, tap the key with the world symbol (globe), which you can find at the bottom left next to the space bar.
- Alternatively, you can hold down the world symbol until a list of the keyboards that you have activated appears. There you will now see the entries "German - German" and "German - QWERTZ". So you always have the choice to return to a keyboard with umlauts without having to go through the "Settings".
