Java doesn't work - you can do that
If Java no longer works on your computer, this may be due to the installation of Java. The cause can also be another program. We'll show you how to fix the most common problems with Java so that the software works properly again.
Java does not work: reinstall the program
- Open the Control Panel and select the "Uninstall a program" option under the "Programs" category.
- Search for Java in the list of installed programs and click on the "Uninstall" button above.
- Download the latest version of Java from our CHIP download area and close your browser.
- Start the installation and follow the further instructions. Java is now installed.
Java is blocked by firewall and anti-virus programs
- Your anti-virus software or the Windows firewall can also cause problems with Java. If certain actions are detected incorrectly, Java is blocked.
- Briefly deactivate your anti-virus software and check whether Java still crashes. Even if you briefly switch off your Windows firewall, you can test whether this is the problem.
Google Chrome: Enable NPAPI for Java
- As of version 42, the NPAPI standard is no longer supported by Google Chrome. This means that Java can no longer be used with Google Chrome.
- However, you can currently still activate NPAPI in the settings. To do this, enter the command "chrome: // flags / # enable-npapi" in a new tab. There click on the "Activate" option and restart Chrome.
- Google has announced that NPAPI will no longer be supported as of 2016. If you want to continue using Java in the browser, you have to switch to alternatives such as Firefox or Safari.
In the next practical tip, we will also show you what to look out for with the Java plug-in in Mozilla Firefox.
