Mac OS X: How to disable Notification Center
If you find the Notification Center in Mac OS X Mountain Lion annoying, you can turn it off. You can read here how it works:
Always disable the OS X notification center
A little bit of work is required to permanently turn off the notification center on OS X Mountain Lion:
- In the Finder, select "Go To" -> "Go To Folder" in the menu bar.
- Now enter "/ System / Library / CoreServices /" in the search field and then click on [Open].
- Here you have to select the application "Mitteilungszentrale.app". Hold down the Option key [alt] and click once on the file name to rename the file (eg "Mitteilungszentrale-off.app").
- Now open a terminal window. To do this, click on the magnifying glass symbol of Spotlight and enter "terminal". Then click on the "Terminal" option.
- In the terminal window, enter the "killall NotificationCenter" command and then press the [Enter] key. The message center is now deactivated.
Disable the OS X Notification Center temporarily
If you only want to temporarily deactivate the message center, you can switch it off until midnight of the respective day. The following day, the message center is automatically reactivated.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 above.
- Hold down the Option key and click the notification center icon in the top right corner of the menu bar.
- Alternatively, you can scroll to the top of the window in the message center and set the slide switch to [0].
