By default, screenshots are saved as PNG files on Mac or MacBook. You can also change the format and save screenprints as a JPG, for example. That's how it's done.
Change screenshot format using the Mac terminal
To permanently change the file format for screenshots, go to the command prompt, the so-called "Terminal".
- Open the Spotlight search ("cmd" + "Space") and type in "Terminal". Confirm with "Enter".
- Enter the command "defaults write com.apple.ScreenCapture type JPG; killAll SystemUIServer" and press the Enter key again. Alternatively, you can also choose a format other than JPG - for example PDF, GIF or TIFF. To do this, replace "JPG" in the command with the appropriate format.
