The Blue Light of Death, BLoD for short, makes life difficult for PS4 owners, but with a bit of luck you can fix the bug yourself. With the BLoD, the PS4 does not start up as usual, and the console light pulsates blue. In the following practical tip, we will help you with the error analysis and give you suggested solutions.
Case 1: problem with the HDMI output
The PS4 devices produced in China in particular suffer from a production error in the HDMI port. A protruding piece of metal will prevent the PlayStation 4 from starting. Under certain circumstances, this error can also permanently damage your HDMI cable.
- Check where your PS4 was made. You can find this information on the bottom of the box of the PlayStation 4. If your console was manufactured in China, it is very likely that the HDMI port was processed incorrectly.
- Check the HDMI port for a protruding piece of metal. If so, try to carefully bend it down. If this is too difficult for you, contact Sony PlayStation Support.
- Plug in the included HDMI cable and connect it to the TV. If your console still does not output an image, it may be because your HDMI cable has already been damaged. In this case, you can try again with a different, standard HDMI cable.
- A tip to all PlayStation 4 buyers: In any case it is advisable to first check the HDMI port for incorrect processing when starting up the PlayStation 4.
Case 2: problem with the power supply
In rare cases, a problem with the power supply leads to the "Blue Light of Death" error of the PlayStation 4.
- To avoid this problem, you can use a different power cable than the one provided and connect it to the PlayStation 4.
- The cable used for the PlayStation 3, for example, is suitable for this.
Case 3: The hard drive is not connected properly
In isolated cases it happens that the hard disk of the PlayStation 4 is not attached correctly, which leads to a BLoD. Since the PlayStation 4 has a removable hard drive installed, you can check for yourself whether the hard drive is installed correctly without losing the warranty for your PS4. You can find explanatory pictures in the picture gallery.
- Turn off the PlayStation 4 and disconnect the device from the power supply and the HDMI cable.
- The PlayStation 4 hard drive is installed under the high-gloss cover on the top of the console. You can simply slide off the cover.
- The hard drive is attached with a single Phillips screw. You can find the screw by the engraved symbols of the PlayStation controller.
- When you have unscrewed the screw, remove the hard drive completely. Check the hard drive for anything unusual and then put it back in the console.
- Tighten the screw and reconnect the PlayStation with the power supply and the HDMI cable.
Case 4: Try to start Safe Mode
If your PlayStation 4 has the BLoD error, it may be helpful to start Safe Mode. Here you can reset the console to the factory settings:
- First, turn off your PlayStation 4 completely. To do this, you must hold down the power button for several seconds. After a beep, the light bar should go out completely.
- Now switch PlayStation 4 back on and hold the button pressed for about seven seconds. The console should beep two times in total: once when you turn on the console and once after you hold down the button. Release the power button after the second beep.
- You should now see the Safe Mode menu on the television. Now connect the controller to the PlayStation 4 using the included USB cable.
- Select point 6 "Intialize PS4" (see also picture gallery). This resets the console to the delivery state. Be patient: the process can take a long time.
BLoD: Your PlayStation 4 cannot be repaired by yourself
