The cost of an animal transport is an important calculation point for long trips. You also have to expect expenses when delivering an animal from abroad. You can find out how high these can be in this practical tip.
Advance costs for animal transportation
Before you even hand over your animal to a transport company or the responsible travel service provider, a few points must be observed in advance. All of them are already associated with expenses.
- Transport container : The transport container can range in size from a dog bag to a transport box for dogs weighing 50 kilograms. Depending on the model, these can cost between 30 and 250 euros. Large dogs in particular usually need more expensive containers.
- Vaccinations : You must vaccinate your animal early enough and have it checked for health problems. The cost of this is highly dependent on your veterinarian. An EU pet passport is also compulsory and usually costs very little.
- Possible quarantine regulations : Countries without rabies such as the United Kingdom, Japan or Hawaii require blood test evidence (rabies antibody proof) and certificates from the official veterinarian before an animal is allowed to enter. Depending on the practice, the costs for this are between 50 and 150 euros per proof. In addition, you have to allow for a possible quarantine stay of the animal. This can be very expensive.
Animal transport: an overview of costs
If you have decided to transport animals, you have several options available, which differ in price.
- Animal transport companies : In most cases, transport companies charge a kilometer price of 0.10 cents to 0.50 cents for transport by car. For a route from Berlin to Paris (about 1, 050 kilometers) that would be between 105 and 525 euros. When traveling by plane, the price is calculated depending on the weight and type of animal, the destination and other services.
- Airlines : Airlines charge fixed prices up to a maximum weight (including a transport box). For animals traveling in the cabin, between 40 (short distance) and 100 euros (long distance) are estimated. Pets transported in the hold are transported for around 70 euros (short distance) up to 500 euros (long distance) depending on the weight.
- Private providers : It can be significantly cheaper through private providers. These vary greatly in price and in most cases a provider covers a certain region. The way it works is similar to the system of ridesharing.
