Ubuntu: Install and set up Thunderbird - how it works
You can also install and set up the popular Thunderbird email program on Ubuntu. We will explain how you can do this via the software center or terminal commands and what you need to consider when you start the program for the first time.
Install Thunderbird in Ubuntu via the software center
The easiest way to install Thunderbird on Ubuntu is through the Ubuntu Software Center.
- Click "Ubuntu Software Center" on the Ubuntu toolbar and search for "Thunderbird" using the search box in the upper right corner.
- Then click on the "Thunderbird Mail" found and there on the "Install" button.
Install Thunderbird on the terminal on Ubuntu
You can also install Thunderbird from the terminal. To do this, open a terminal window under Ubuntu (Ctrl + Alt + T).
- In the terminal, type "sudo apt-get install thunderbird thunderbird-locale-de" (without quotation marks) and confirm with the Enter key.
- Then install the German language pack using "sudo apt-get install thunderbird-locale-de".
- Execute a "sudo apt-get update" in the terminal.
Set up Thunderbird on Ubuntu
Then open the installed Thunderbird in the applications.
- The first time you click on "Skip and use my existing email address".
- Then enter your email address and password and confirm with "Next".
- You may have to edit your incoming and outgoing server data via "Manually edit". This is especially the case if you have set up your email address for unknown domains.
- Select IMAP if you want to save the messages on the server or POP3 if you want to save the messages on the computer.
- Save with "Done".
Install additional extensions for Thunderbird
You can easily add additional extensions for your Ubuntu Thunderbird via the software center.
- Double click on "Thunderbird Mail" and you will be shown a list of available extensions.
- For example, check "Additional extensions" below "Calendar extension for Thunderbird".
- Save the changes via "Apply changes".
