What is Gorilla Glass? Clearly explained
Many new smartphones and tablets are equipped with Gorilla Glass. We will tell you what is special about this technology in our practical tip.
Gorilla glass - advantage of the massive display panes
Gorilla Glass, or Germanized Gorilla Glass, is an invention of the manufacturer Corning. The glass is particularly break and scratch resistant and is used for mobile phones and tablets with a touchscreen.
- What is special about the glass is the so-called chemical tempering. An ion exchange process during production creates tensions on the surface that make the glass more resistant.
- According to Corning, gorilla glass is more than twice as scratch-resistant as conventional glass. The crack resistance is said to be 8 times higher.
- A further development is the Gorilla Glass 2, which has the same strength, but withstands high temperatures better, for example due to sunlight, without softening.
- The strength was further increased with the Gorilla Glass 3: it should be three times as firm as the Gorilla Glass 2.
- The Gorilla Glass 4, with which the breaking strength has been improved, is brand new. According to the manufacturer, the glass survives falls from a height of 4 meters in 4 out of 5 cases.
- In addition to the higher strength, the gorilla glass has a lower weight, better light transmission and is more sensitive to touch, so touch screens react better.
