In order to be able to supply more and more devices with the Internet, the IPv6 protocol was introduced. We'll show you how to deactivate it under Windows 7 here. This enables you to rule out security risks, since some firewalls are not yet programmed to control the new protocol. As soon as usage begins to be widespread, you can switch on IPv6 again.
Turn off the IPv6 protocol in Windows 7
You can deactivate the IPv6 protocol for your network card in Windows 7 in just a few steps.
- Click on "Start" or the Windows key and open the "Control Panel".
- In the window that opens, select "Network and Sharing Center" and then click on "Change adapter settings" in the left column.
- Select the network connection for which you want to deactivate IPv6. To do this, right-click on this, for example, "wireless network connection". In the menu that appears, click "Properties".
- In the last window, remove the tick from "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP / IPv6)" and confirm with OK.
If the IPv6 protocol finally prevails, you should activate it again, as it generally offers better security measures. For the best protection, take a look at our current software test on firewalls.
