If Windows 7 reports error 651 and claims that a network cable is missing when connecting to the Internet, a specific driver is usually to blame. Find out what you can do about it here.
Error 651: Replace DSL driver raspppoe.sys
The error occurs very often in connection with the DSL driver "raspppoe.sys". If you have installed this driver, navigate to the directory "windows \ system32 \ drivers" and rename the driver to "raspppoe_alt.sys". Now you need a Vista version of this driver that clearly works. If necessary, ask a friend. Copy this version into the directory mentioned above. If everything works, delete the renamed version.
Change LAN settings in Windows 7
If you have not installed raspppoe and you still get error 651, the following steps may help:
- Click on the start menu and search for "Network and Sharing Center".
- Open the menu item and click on "Change adapter settings".
- Right click on Local Area Connection and click "Properties"
- Click the "Configure" button and the "Advanced" tab.
- Under "Speed and duplex mode" select the value "10 Mbit / s full duplex".
In Vista and Windows 7 raspppoe hardly brings anything, because here Microsoft has optimized some of the DSL settings. If at all possible, do without this relic from the XP era.
